I’m Like a Scientist

December 16, 2011
Ok, this is a for real question for anyone out there: how many regular, non-girly style pushups can you really, honestly do? I’m talking in one setting, no breaks or rests in between. I’m curious….’cause I suck. I’m pretty sure that pushups = death for me.

Turns out, I’m lucky if I can do 10. I know because I tried this morning at the gym. I usually stick to girly pushups, but I thought to myself, “This is ridiculous, self. (Wo)man up and do a real pushup, for the love.” And then I got sad because I actually couldn’t. If I was more the type to administer self-challenges, I’d try that 100 pushups/100 day challenge that I’ve seen floating around the web.

But I know that I won’t. The fact is that getting me to body pump and yoga and swimming and running and spin class and skiing and snowshoeing every week takes up all of my “exercise” time. Not sure I want to spend it attempting a painful looking plank thing. But we’ll see. Maybe next week when I’m on break from school (!) and still on winter break from work (!!) Or….I might just ski again.

My second experiment of the day was even more comical. Picture, if you will, me on the treadmill before yoga. I meant to get there 45 minutes early so I could get a decent run in before class, but of course, that didn’t happen. To many sheep to count and cookies to eat; I couldn’t be bothered :) Anyway, I did manage to drag my butt there about 20 minutes before class so I did hop on the tm for a hot minute, as a warmup.
And then this brilliant idea hit me: remember awhile back when I was talking about how the Boston winner ran the equivalent of a 12.6 treadmill pace while he raced Boston? Again, I thought to myself, “Alright self, you only have like 10 minutes on this treadmill. Why not make the most of it?”

Please remember that I usually average around a 5.5-5.6 tm pace, if I’m lucky. We’ve established many times that while I love running, I’m a snail. So why more than double my tm pace seemed like a good idea to me at the time, I’m not exactly sure. Maybe it was curiosity? Do treadmills actually go that fast??

I’m not sure because apparently, my legs don’t actually go that fast! I got up to like a 10.3 (roughly a 5:50 mile) and I felt like I was going to fly off the machine!!! I briefly thought about trying to slow myself down by smashing my hand on the buttons, but it was clear that I was too far gone for that. I had to pull a Biggest Loser contestant manuever and leap to the guard rails for safety.

To make matters worse? It was embarrassing. Everyone was staring at the crazy girl who decided to see if she could outrun the treadmill for 2-3 seconds. On the bright side, at least I didn’t fall. I’m pretty sure that conveyor belt would have whipped me into the plate glass windows had I made one false move!

Apparently, Meb and Geoffrey Mutai and Kara Goucher and Ryan Hall still have a leg up on me. Well played, my friends. Well played.

How in the world do you people run at a 5 minute pace?? If you run that fast, how fast are your sprint intervals???

Ok, for real: how many pushups can you do??
