Hits ‘n Misses of October

Happy Monday y’all!

I seriously cannot get over the fact that it is November. I have 13 days left of work and less than two months until Christmas and the holiday season. What the hell happened to 2012?! I remember my parents telling me that time passes more quickly as you aged, but I always thought that was something that “old” people said. Apparently I’m ancient now because I daresay it’s true!

Anyway. Moving on.

The month of October, per the pattern, flew by for me and was full of some serious high and low points. Let’s chat about those, shall we?

1. Game of Thrones, the TV show. Man, I’m seriously behind the bell curve on this one, but I seriously heart this show. Season one is on Netflix and I flew through all of the discs. If you’re at all interested in medieval/royal/mystical-type stuff, check the show out. And PS: Daenerys is freaking bad ass. Just saying.

2. Dry Shampoo. Not all dry shampoo, just this one in particular:

After getting my hairs cut, I decided to stage a rebellion and quit washing my hair. Well, not entirely, but I seriously cut back. Instead of the 5-6 hair washings a week, I am now down to a max of two (Of course, I still shower. Ewwww, that would be gross otherwise!) This dry shampoo seriously rocks my world and makes it possible so that I don’t walk around looking like I have a wet rat on my head. Plus, my hair is now way softer. Score.

3. Big Horn Crossfit. Y’all, I am loving this whole crossfit thing. Muy bueno. It’s a nice change from the years of pure endurance sports, and I am totally noticing added leg strength in my running and hiking. I cannot wait until I get on my skis this season because I suspect that I won’t be suffering from early-season weak legs like in years past!

4. Did I mention that work is almost done for the season? I don’t think I can stress this point enough.

5. Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness. I die. Do y’all remember the original Smashing Pumpkins (pre-breakup in 2000)? They were one of my fave bands in the 90s, and I recently re-discovered how much I love this particular album (Thank you, Pandora!) There is absolutely not a bad song on this album, and I have been cranking it in my car and on my runs. I’ve always loved 90s rock (i.e. Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Rage Against the Machine, Candlebox, etc.), but this album truly makes me smile 🙂

1. Election Year Chit Chat. Pretty self-explanatory, I think. Please, do your duty as an American and go vote….but don’t try to make me change my mind or tell me an I’m an idiot for choosing “my” candidate. Promise, that doesn’t make we want to alter my opinion!

2. Game of Thrones, the series of novels. It’s hard for me to admit, but I just don’t like this series of books! As usual, I made an effort to read these books before checking out the TV show because I usually prefer the story in print rather than on screen. However, I am on the third book and I’ve finally realized that I’m just not that into the books! I struggled with the first one and became interested enough to begin the second. Since then, it’s been all downhill. I finally put the third book down after reading 100 pages…and I haven’t picked it back up. Oh well.

3. No Gluten Allergies For Me. I already mentioned how my blood tests came back negative for any type of food allergies, but it still belongs on this list. No, I really don’t want to be allergic to anything, but I would much rather monitor my food instead of suck on an inhaler! Now that the temps are dropping, I have to be more aware of my asthma since the cold weather really constricts my lungs. I have to be sure to run and ski with my inhaler, and quite honestly, it’s wicked annoying. Sigh.

Do you have any book recommendations for me?

What were your October high points?

Loved reading your hits n misses!! I’m a dry shampoo fan too!! I hope you have a great Monday and will say a prayer for your asthma issues!! Spa love!

I LOVE dry shampoo! I only wash my hair 3 times a week and use baby powder as a dry shampoo on days I don’t wash it. Works wonders!

I use baby powder when I’m backpacking, although it does make me look like I have gray hair 🙂

Hard to believe the year is coming to a close. I, for one, will not miss all the election shenanigans after tomorrow.

I LOVE the Game of Thrones books, I think I read the whole series at least three times and have a hard time coming back to reality. the HBO series are pretty great and they did pretty good with all the characters.

so excited for the election to be over and see who the winner is. I sure hope it is who I voted for 😉

Seriously, that’s what EVERYONE says about those books! What am I missing?! And yeah, I’m hoping my guy wins tomorrow, too. Maybe my guy is your guy and then we’ll both be happy 🙂

I think October flew past me too!

I don’t like dry shampoo. Maybe I just used too much at a time.

I read so many books I recently started a page on my blog devoted to my books. I read one recently that might be up your alley called The River. I’ll happily mail it to you.

It is hard to find a good dry shampoo. I’ll check your recommendation out.

    • Reply Colorado Gal November 6, 2012 at 1:32 am

Please do send it my way! I’ll literally read anything, but I’m always open to suggestions.

And yes, you MUST try this shampoo! I tried so many and this one definitely works the best– even better than it’s wicked cheap. I think it’s like $4 maybe?

is it weird that when I read “Y’all, I am loving this whole crossfit thing” I could picture you saying it with your cute accent!! (:

    • Reply Colorado Gal November 6, 2012 at 1:34 am

NOT weird at all! Except…I don’t have an accent! I pick up random dialect words and they somehow get incorporated into my vocabulary. I have no idea where “y’all” came from, but I like to think it blends well with “wicked” which is a New England term I picked up when I lived in Maine. I’m a mess 🙂

I just now discovered dry shampoo and love it! Lifesaver after lunch runs at work. I just bought Dove, but I need to try Got2b next.

Book-wise, tis the season for Stephen King.

So happy that crossfit is doing wonders for you. That’s awesome. And hooray for the end the season! That means we get to see each other soon!!

So I almost had a heart attack trying to read this terrified of a GOT spoiler. As I said, I’ve been on the third book forever even though I love it. Maybe I should cut down on blog reading…nah. I’m not willing to pay for Crossfit but I seriously need SOMETHING different after JFK to give me a break from running. Haha do I remember SP original album – that album basically was the second most important thing of my 8th-10th grade life (first was Bush and Gavin Rossdale). I missed a concert because my friend had a free ticket and thought I was at my mom’s house but I was at my dad’s house….let’s not even go there. Did you know they have a movie? Like sort of a documentary? So does Bush…ya….I was REALLY into 90s rock.

PS We are seriously the more and more the same person as the days go on 🙂

  • Reply Glamorous Ski Bum November 6, 2012 at 12:06 pm

    October hit : glacier skiing
October miss : Over-coverage of everything New York and Obama by the French media

I’ve heard to much about dry shampoo, but I still have no idea how it works! You spray it on your roots and leave it? it’s like powder?

    • Reply Colorado Gal November 6, 2012 at 12:24 pm

It’s almost like a spray powder but it sprays just like hairspray. You spray it onto your roots and it soaks up all the dirt and oil, etc. It’s pretty miraculous, and this is coming from someone with thin hair that tends to get oily!

You should check out the Stephanie Plum novels by Janet Evanovich. I’ve been recommending them all over the place because they are so hilarious! I’m with you on the election stuff. I’m sure it’s really hard for you since you live in a swing state. Hang in there-almost done!
