Compression & Recovery

I know, another weekend post? Who am I?! I think my internal clock is skewed since I’m not working anymore so the notion of weekends vs. weekdays is a bit fuzzy!

A year ago, I was completely unfamiliar with compression and how it could help me. In fact, I even wrote a post last summer, searching for some advice. Since then, I’ve had the opportunity to try out different brands and different items to help me decide on what works best for me. I sure didn’t know it last year, but compression apparently comes in socks, calf sleeves, arm sleeves, shorts and tights. You name it and someone makes it!

Since then, I’ve decided on a few things. First of all, I really like compression for recovery but it doesn’t do much for me during a workout. I know a lot of runners prefer to use compression socks during races but I’m not one of them. In fact, I don’t love wearing any type of knee socks (Yes, Crossfitters world-wide will gasp at that!) Because of my jacked up feet (hello, bunions!), I have to run in toe socks. Otherwise, I get mad blisters between my toes. However, I seem to be the minority on that one, so we’ll move right along.

(Actually, now that I think about it, I should totally try compression sleeves, huh?)

Secondly, I was recently afforded the opportunity to try out some PRO Compression socks and I was psyched. I’ve heard about Pro Compression from numerous runners and it has always been glowing remarks. These seem to be the favorite compression socks of many, so I couldn’t wait to see if my opinion match.

For the record? It definitely does.

I’m a big fan of putting on compression socks after a long run or a grueling Crossfit workout when I know I’m going to be sore the next day. For me, the compression really seems to help my legs recover. I get lots of knots in my calves from running in minimalist shoes, so the compression in that area is especially important to me. I really like PRO Compression socks because they just feel tighter than some of the other socks I’ve tried. When I run my hand over my calf while wearing the socks, it feels like all of my muscles and skin are held in, nice and tight. I feel like that’s how compression should feel!

Know what else? PRO Compression socks come in fun colors. Not to be a girl or anything, but I feel like that is a critical element! Obviously, I received both pink and white (pink, for the win!), but I looked at their site and they have lots of fun colors. They even have a fun one for the holidays!

If you’re curious about PRO Compression, or compression socks in general, and want to give it a try, use the code FIT40 at checkout. It will get you 40% off your purchase plus free shipping and is good until 12/15!

I was provided with the socks as part of a FitFluential campaign. Opinions expressed are my own.

  1. Love Pro Comression socks, but my absolute favorite things ever are CEP compression sleeves. I actually forgot to bring them to my marathon last week for after the race and had a mini freak out :) Wouldn’t you know, my calves were more sore and tighter than they’ve been since I switched to minimalist shoes a year ago! I also like the sleeved because my feet tend to get overheated in the full sock, but if I’m going to wear the socks Pro Compression are my top choice.

    • I seriously swear by compression for recovery now. It definitely speeds up the process and I have definitely noticed less knots in my calves. Will always works out in compression socks too because he insists that his calves suffer otherwise. So, I definitely think it’s worth a shot! Plus, with 40% off plus free shipping? Pretty good deal.

  2. OMG. Why haven’t you tried calf sleeves? I like them becauase they allow me to wear my favorite socks….I don’t like things putting pressure on my extra long finger toes. Down fall: they are so expensive and something else to launder!!

  3. The holiday compression socks ROCK!!! I’ve never ever worn compression (I guess I’m so old school, what works don’t change it??), but I know many who swear by them.

  4. Love compression. Shorts and socks. I would pretty much wear them all the time if people wouldn’t look at me weird and I had enough pairs for all days of the week:)

  5. I got my first pair of ProCompression I love them. I want them in every color. I dont however like to wear them in the summer they are just to hot for me, but fall, spring, winter and recovery. Love them

  6. Do you ever wear them for your outdoor adventures? I was thinking about getting a pair or two to wear snowboarding (because that always makes my calves so sore, especially at the beginning of the season), but I wasn’t sure how they would work for that.

    • I have actually! I’ve worn them backpacking and hiking, as well as skiing/snowshoeing when it isn’t too cold. I especially like them for backpacking and snowshoeing!

(I’ve also worn them– and will continue to wear them– on planes. Wearing compression keeps my circulation moving during those long flights!)
